TRINITY UNITED CHURCH
A CHURCH STEEPED IN HISTORY – A CHURCH ON THE CUTTING EDGE OF INNOVATION
Trinity was founded in 1871 and has provided spiritual support, community outreach and pastoral care to this region for almost 150 years. Yet Trinity is also an innovative church that has pioneered the use of technology in worship, education, and community outreach. Click on the topics below to see what Trinity does here and beyond
REV. DR. RANDY BOYD
Randy has served Trinity now since 1990. He graduated from St. Andrew’s College with a Master’s degree in theology, and has earned a PhD in Education, where he studied the educational value of video games. The congregation appreciates Randy for his strong preaching, his innovations in multisite ministry and his sense of humour. Randy believes that religion is a portal to the imagination and that we all are created in the image of God and as such are creators ourselves.
Joan is the ultimate church secretary, organized, efficient and friendly. No matter how busy she is, Joan always makes you feel welcome in the church office. She enjoys her work because it is constantly changing and often challenging. No time for her to get bored.
MUSIC DIRECTOR AND ORGANIST
Trinity is blessed with a wonderful music team. Marcella Smithers is a musician with many God-given talents. Whether it is at the organ, the piano, with the handbells, or with the choir – she is a senior citizen with many years of experience teaching, accompanying, and leading. Sandra Cosbey comes to us from Regina, Saskatchewan and brings a wealth of musical talent, experience, and leadership – plus a very musical family! We are truly fortunate to have such an exceptional musical team.
MAINTENANCE AND SECURITY
Canada and especially Trinity United Church are very fortunate to call Adan one of our own. Adan, a soft spoken, always smiling gentleman from El Salvador, is not one to sit still for very long. He is always on the move cleaning, repairing, or setting up and taking down for one event or another. A jack of all trades and master of all, Adan takes much pride in his work and keeps Trinity spotless.
TRINITY’S CHANCEL CHOIR
Oh the joy of singing! Trinity’s Chancel Choir is a closely-knit musical family of some 17 singers (if everyone is present). The choir’s goal/ambition is commitment to use their God-given talents to provide inspiring music. The Choir provides hymn-singing leadership in the Sunday services. This choir reads the musical page well and has the capability of singing in four-part harmony easily. What do you think? Want to sing with us? Contact Marcella at the church.
Have you ever rung a handbell? There is no other musical experience that compares to being a part of a handbell choir. This ensemble has a dozen regular ringers along with several substitute ringers. They presently rehearse on Tuesday afternoons from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and must be committed to ‘hardly-ever‘ missing a rehearsal! Try to imagine this — lift a couple keys off the piano keyboard and try playing without them. Those notes/keys/bells would be dreadfully missed! And so it goes with this group! This is a superb ensemble and a fun-fun group of musicians who come from 6 different churches in Thunder Bay. If you’re interested, Trinity will host a beginning ringer’s class in the summer of 2017! Keep in touch!
We have a beautiful church and we have incredible organ and piano music. We have the larger sanctuary that holds up to 425 people, as well as a smaller chapel for 50. We also have the ability to live stream your wedding on the internet so those from a distance can celebrate this special day with you. Contact us today if you are interested in a viewing of the Church for your wedding.
You may be seeking baptism for yourself or for your child or grandchild. As part of the tradition, we do baptisms. However, many adults today have not been baptized, and adult baptisms are becoming popular. We have no fee for Baptisms, please contact us today if you are interested!
One of the most important ministries we have at Trinity is helping those who are grieving. If we can help with a funeral or memorial service, please contact us. In addition to our regular services, we also can live stream a funeral service so others who can’t make it home can still remember with you.
